With the upcoming 40 mile AT trail run I have been looking for ways to increase my mileage and elevation. So I have been trying to think outside the box to keep my interest and push my body to get stronger. After doing the bike – hike – bike a few weeks ago, I wondered how many times I could hike up Stone Mountain.
I arrived around 6:30am that morning and took off almost immediately up the mountain, fast hiking all the way to the top to complete my first pass. Then took my time on the decent to reach the turn around near the train tracks. After the first, the next two times felt great because the sun had not peaked above the top of the mountain so the west side was still in its own shadow.
The next four ascents I powered hiked the best that I could taking in water, gels and eating Sports Beans. Overall it was a lot of fun to push my myself in that way. I could definitely feel the climbing in my legs and enjoyed feeling the almost “pump” like feeling one gets after lifting weights. I could have gone for ten but I didn’t leave enough time for myself. I felt good enough to continue… but the Boss Lady was expecting me home shortly before 12pm. So I finished my 7th ascent and ran all the way back to the car.
