Run commute + Morning 5K Race 6/14

My Thursday morning run commute included a 5K run/walk event to raise awareness for men’s health week. While I had all intentions to just jog and enjoy my time, my competitiveness took over and I took off at the start. Since it was a work event there wasn’t a huge pool of people that showed up so the level of relative fitness was spread thin and wide. So, I ended up running much of the race by myself until about .25 from the finish. Before that, somewhere around the 1.5-2 mile mark my stomach started to rumble and I struggled to push the pace all the way to the finish in fear of embarrassment :0. Anyways, I did my best considering the circumstances and finished about 6th overall. From there I finished my morning commute and jogged the last .25 mile to work.

The afternoon commute was better than the morning besides the fact that I was still physically sore, my stomach did stay calm all the way back to the apartment. On the way I was able to take my first CR on a short .2 mile climb. Running KOMs, I feel, are much different than cycling KOMs. Cycling you are able to somewhat hide your fitness level after going all out for a certain segment. With running your miles splits are a key indicator of how fit you are, thus if you take a KOM/CR from another guy who ran a 5 minute pace for his entire run you feel a little ashamed. That’s exactly what I did after placing 8th in the same segment that morning, I went back in the afternoon and ran all out to get it. 🙂 No shame game. After catching my breath, I headed back and ran slowly in the thick heat. On my way I found the stethoscope pictured above, it had a name on it so I picked it up. I was able to contact the person the next day and returned it to them. Good deed done for the week! To date this run commute was my longest combine commute, 14 miles.

Morning Commute: 7.98 miles | 8:47/mi

Afternoon Commute: 6.21 miles | 9:27/mi
