Diamondback (DB) released their concept aero road bike on October 4, 2017, the IO with SPEEDCORE. I’m not quite sure what the IO stands for but I’m sure the bike was designed by a few Individual Opinions. If you already follow Diamondback, then you already know about their triathlon bike, the Andean. With the two side by side you can see where the overall concept came from. After reading their Diamondback IO White paper (WP) a few items stood out on why this could be the future.
SpeedCore Features:
- Their SpeedCore dimple technology: using golf ball aerodynamics, they applied dimple-like divots to the downtube, seat tube and fork.
- Ultralow Seat Stays: they decided to lower the seat stays rather than removing because they add lateral stiffness which is needed on a road bike.
- Aero Bottom Bracket Storage: just like the Andean, you can access storage via a hatch like cover. Can probably store 10 cliff bars or a tube and a few Co2 cartridges.
- Aero Handlebar: Why re-invent the wheel? DB decided to use ZIPP’s SL-70 Aero handlebar. Not bad, not bad.
- Covert Routing Process: full integrated cable routing from rear brake to the front brake.
My Opinion:
Overall, I enjoy the new concepts and appreciate their forward thinking designs. It is exciting to see bike companies push the boundaries. However, the round seat tube on the new IO does not belong. Sticks out like a sore thumb. I am surprised they did not integrate an aero seat tube, but understand the cost and functionality that is lost if they did. Other than the seat tube, everything make sense and looks great. Maybe one day I will get to test ride one…
If you would like to read more, here’s the WP again: Diamondback IO.
What’s Next:
With the aero triathlon and road bike down, maybe Diamondback will make an aero fat bike or gravel bike. What do you think?
