Buyer beware. The Champion C9 Breathable Jacket is not waterproof.
Last weekend I discovered this great looking Gore-Tex knockoff at my local target (Target Link). The construction of the inner membrane looks very similar to other expensive breathable rain jackets like Gore-Tex. Thus, making me believe that it was well worth the $60 price tag. They didn’t have my size in the store, so later that night, I added enough items to my online cart to qualify for free shipping so I could test out the jacket. A few days later it arrived and luck would have it, rain was scheduled in the upcoming week..
The rainy day eventually arrived. It was raining the morning I woke up to bike commute to work, so I pulled up my britches, punched my arms through the sleeves of the jacket and pushed off into the downpour. I had quite the beaming smile as I pedaled in the rain. The thought of the jacket working, was quite euphoric. But that feeling of euphoria did not last long, I noticed quickly down the street that the outer layer of the jacket absorbed every damn rain drop.
In my head I was weighing the future outcome, thinking back to Gore-Tex’s website, where it explains the membrane and how that is the layer that’s waterproof and breathable. So I was just wishing that the knock-off Champion C9 membrane would actually be waterproof, and then thought I could somehow treat the outer layer with never-wet or some other water repellant spray.
Like all good things must come to an end, the feeling of wetness started to build up on my sleeves about halfway into the ride. By the time I reached my workplace, the jacket beneath the rain jacket was soaked.
Construction:
The overall construction of the jacket seems solid. Inside the jacket you will find welded seams to “keep out” the water. The membrane inside the jacket feels solid, making you believe it would be waterproof.
- For light rain, the jacket would work well if you treat the outer layer with some sort of rain repellant.
- For heavy rain, the jacket, even with the outer layer treated, would not be functional enough to keep you dry.

I returned it because it wasn’t waterproof. Target does have similar jackets in their stores, but the jackets are a little thinner. It seems like they removed the outer layer that was absorbing the water.
