DIY LifeStraw Universal Water Bottle Hack

DIY LifeStraw Water Bottle Hack:

This hack utilizes the standard LifeStraw Personal Water Filter and makes it more convenient to use. The standard LifeStraw filter requires you to sip directly from a stream or stick the straw in an open container. Who wants to lie down next to a creek and slurp water through a plastic straw… Let me tell you, no one older than 25 years old wants to do that. So you have two options, purchase an existing product or make your own.

LifeStraw’s bottle/filter combo called the LifeStraw Go and another product called the LifeStraw Universal adapter kit that can fit a few different brands of water bottles, both can be purchased for at least $35. These are great options if you need to quickly purchase a filter bottle before an upcoming trip.

Below you will find a video or step by step instructions with pictures of how to make your own DIY LifeStraw Filter Water Bottle.

Here’s a Quick Video of the Process:

How To Make Your Own (Step by Step):

1. Find a bottle that is long enough that allows the LifeStraw to sit close to the bottom. This will allow you to drink most of the water from the bottle. A standard 24oz cycling water bottle will work perfectly.

2. Pull the rubber water bottle nipple from the cap. Then squeeze off the plastic nipple piece that the rubber nipple sits on with pliers or cut the plastic nipple with shears. This helps the hole saw to sit in the middle of the cap while you cut the hole.

3. Then use a 1 1/4 Hole Saw to cut a hole in the center bottle lid. This cuts a hole just wide enough for the LifeStraw to slide through.

4. Here you can accomplish the construction of your LifeStraw water bottle in a few different ways. You can use food grade silicone sealant to seal the LifeStraw to the lid once you slide it through. This will prevent any leaks from occurring around the hole that you cut. Or you can place a some tape around the top of the LifeStraw to create a tighter fit and then use o-rings on both sides to hold the straw in the right position. While this does not create a perfect seal, it does allow you to pack down the lid and the straw, and it allows you to replace the LifeStraw super easily.

5. Enjoy your new filter bottle!
